God give me patience, and give it to me NOW!
I remembered my days of corporate IT. 20+ years working developing IT solutions for Sales and Marketing. Very dynamic to put it nicely. Everything needed to be rush, rush. Everything was last minute and extremely important. CEO would ask us for a solution, we would tell him 12 months, he would say “I need to be done in 3 months!!” We would say, IMPOSSIBLE! They would hire consultants, charging a buckload of money, promising to be done in 3 months. I remember working 80 hour weeks for months, just at the end to have an obsolete solution done after 12 months (despite the hype from consulting firms) simply because there was no planning AT ALL. Trial by fire.
I remember a funny colleague of mine saying he constantly wanted to take his pants out, paint his butt red and run down the halls yelling FIRE! That is pretty much how we felt. No one thought about planning long term. And I understand why. CEOs are paid in bonuses and if you don’t look like you are making progress you don’t get a bonus. And after a few dozen million dollars in bonuses if you get “fired”, who cares. You go pretend you are making progress someplace else.
OK, sorry I’m being overly bitter here but this is somewhat how we conduct our lives. We have this constant internal pressure to be making progress, to pay the bills, to move forward.
But what if forward is not the right direction?
In management training I heard many jokes. One that really stuck to me is as follows: “A group of people was braving through a forest. Chopping branches, clearing the path so the rest of the group could walk through. The guide stopped the group, climbed on a tree to look at the terrain. He suddenly yelled – WRONG FORREST! The group below went quiet for a while and then yelled back – SHUT UP! We are making progress. So we are trained to make progress, to make money, but not to stop and think if we are making progress in the right direction.
But if you Trust the Lord for progress we dread God’s timing, right?
“For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.” Habakkuk 2:3
At least for me it always looks like everything happens at the very last possible second. Always!!! Why Lord, why? The reason is simple. When people that knew what would take to get something done say 12 months, it will take 12 months. Don’t matter how much money and effort you put into it, it can’t be done in 3 months. And we are talking about an infinitely smaller operation that involves a few hundred people and some dozen locations. To get all people, all systems in all the locations ready and right, takes time. It’s like a giant puzzle.
Now think of your own desires. “Well, that is different. It’s just me!” – No it’s not!!
Everything you want to accomplish in your life depends on other people. EVERYTHING!! Think about it. And each person that may be involved in your life project depends on other people and so on and so on. Think of The Butterfly Effect where an insignificant change in a remote location can have a devastating impact elsewhere. Now think of God’s Plan complexity where thousands if not millions of people will somehow be affected by what you want? He can’t afford leaving things to chance, so He crafts His plan for things to happen precisely at the very last possible second because if He does not all hell breaks loose. Literally.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
But you CANNOT abandon your way.
If you do all His efforts that took an incomprehensible amount of time to create all goes to waste.
“But I don’t know if I really want this?” Well then it is not God’s problem. It’s yours. Find out what you really, really, really want. Plan to achieve it. As God for wisdom on how to achieve it and work for it diligently until God’s promises come to pass.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5
Do this with all your might and God will give you the desires of your heart.
“Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4
